Stablecoin Transfers Quadruple to $891B in Q3 as U.S. Banks Test the Rails, Coinbase Study Finds
Published October 21, 2026, 12:30 AM PKT. Based on the report "The Always-On Dollar: Money for an Economy that Doesn't Close," research conducted for Coinbase by The Block Pro Research and published October 20, 2026 (primary source), with additional reporting from The Block and CoinTelegraph (secondary sources).
Stablecoins are moving more than $400 million per hour in organic transfer activity, and the quarterly total reached $891 billion in the third quarter of 2026, more than four times the level of early 2023, according to new research conducted for Coinbase by The Block Pro Research. The study, titled "The Always-On Dollar," used data from Allium adjusted to screen out automated activity and bots, and found stablecoin volume is on pace to reach about $1.5 trillion per quarter by the end of 2027 if the current growth rate continues.
The $891 billion quarter
Adjusted stablecoin transfer volume has more than quadrupled since the start of 2023, reaching $891 billion in Q3 2026, per Allium data cited in the report. That works out to over $400 million an hour in average organic transfer activity during the quarter, with the researchers projecting roughly $1.5 trillion per quarter by the end of 2027 at current growth rates. The figures are adjusted for automated activity and bots. The report's methodology note, citing Dune Analytics data as of August 2026, excludes transfers under $1, self-transfers, and minting and burning activity.
73% moves while banks sleep
Seventy-three percent of screened stablecoin transfer volume took place outside U.S. banking hours, at nights, on weekends and on holidays, according to the study. The finding covers the 12 months ending July 31, 2026, The Block reported, and points to demand for money that moves when the banking system is closed, a 24/7 economy adopting 24/7 money, in the report's framing. Sending a $200 remittance in USDC on Base costs about 86% less than a traditional transfer, the report said, citing World Bank remittance prices from Q3 2025 and provider fee schedules as of August 2026.
Seven of the ten largest U.S. banks are testing
Seven of the ten largest U.S. banks have tested stablecoins or tokenized deposits for settlement, and the remaining three have announced plans to do so, according to the report, which cites company press releases and filings as of October 2026. Many are partnering with Coinbase, the exchange said. Adoption among businesses is also climbing: 30% of mid-market companies conducting cross-border business are using or piloting stablecoins, up from 10% in 2024, per CoinTelegraph's summary of the report, and business-to-business payment volume rose 36% year over year.
293 million addresses vs. AmEx and Discover
Some 293 million unique blockchain addresses now hold stablecoins, exceeding the combined 227 million cards issued by American Express and Discover, according to the study, which draws on RWA.xyz data as of October 2026. That address count is also nearly twice the combined 156.7 million mobile banking users of JPMorgan Chase, Bank of America, Wells Fargo and Citi. The report cautions that unique addresses do not equal unique people and that the comparisons are not directly like-for-like, only a measure of scale.
The $155 billion scenario
The report models one scenario in which moving 80% of international transactions onto stablecoin rails could add $155 billion to annual global GDP and free up about $3 trillion in liquidity that banks currently hold to support cross-border payments. The researchers stressed these are modeled scenarios, not observed gains or forecasts, and acknowledged that widespread stablecoin adoption could reduce bank lending, which would offset some of the benefits of faster and cheaper payments, The Block reported. Separately, the report cites McKinsey's January 2026 estimate that AI agents could mediate $3 trillion to $5 trillion of global consumer commerce by 2030, adding a machine-driven layer to the always-on money thesis.
