BlackRock Files for iShares Bitcoin Managed Protection ETF, Capped Upside on IBIT With Downside Buffer

Editorial digital-art illustration in the CoinTelegraph style: a giant translucent golden shield dome arching protectively over a glowing orange bitcoin coin with smaller teal coins beneath, candlestick chart elements rising behind the shield, a gold ceiling band above symbolizing capped upside, dark blue background with dramatic gold light rays, cinematic painterly ultra-detailed 16:9 composition, no text.

Published October 20, 2026, 4:15 AM PKT. Based on the iShares Trust registration application filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission on October 19, 2026 (primary source), The Block's October 19, 2026 report on the filing (secondary source), PANews' October 20, 2026 report on the filing (secondary source), and Bloomberg Intelligence analyst James Seyffart's October 19, 2026 post on X (secondary source). MABOnChain has not previously covered the iShares Bitcoin Managed Protection ETF filing.

BlackRock's iShares Trust filed a registration application with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission on October 19, 2026 for the iShares Bitcoin Managed Protection ETF, ticker PBIT. The fund seeks upside exposure to the iShares Bitcoin Trust ETF (IBIT), and to similar bitcoin exposure, up to an approximate cap, while offering a degree of downside protection, according to the filing reported by The Block.

PANews reported the filing on October 20, adding that the fund's strategy typically involves buying bitcoin options in three tranches while selling options to offset the purchase cost, a trade that limits the upside the fund can capture, and investing in fixed-income products whose interest income is used to hedge the option costs and provide the downside protection.

The three-tranche options engine

The structure is a managed version of an options collar. BlackRock buys bitcoin call options in three tranches to harvest IBIT's upside, while the options it sells generate premium income that pays for those purchases, which is what caps the fund's return near a defined level. The fixed-income sleeve adds a second funding source: interest from bonds earns steady income that offsets option costs and builds the downside buffer, PANews reported. The fund therefore targets IBIT's rise only up to the cap, and aims to lose less than IBIT when bitcoin falls.

The price of protection: the cap

The tradeoff is explicit in the filing language: "upside exposure ... up to an approximate limit" and only "a level of downside protection," The Block quoted. In a runaway bitcoin rally, PBIT holders would keep the capped portion of IBIT's gains and leave the rest on the table, while in a drawdown the options and bond income are designed to cushion the fall rather than eliminate it. It is built for investors who want bitcoin exposure without bitcoin's full volatility, not for maximalists chasing the entire move.

IBIT's $65 billion anchor

The new fund rides on the back of the largest bitcoin ETF ever. BlackRock's iShares Bitcoin Trust holds more than $65 billion in assets under management, the largest of its kind, according to The Block's bitcoin ETF tracker. BlackRock launched IBIT in January 2024, and in June launched the iShares Bitcoin Premium Income ETF, which gives investors bitcoin exposure while generating monthly option premium income. The managed protection fund is the third product built on BlackRock's bitcoin ETF franchise.

The filing lands at a fragile moment for bitcoin ETF demand. Spot bitcoin ETFs recorded $228.6 million in net outflows for the week ended October 16, according to an October 18 weekly market roundup, and Bitfinex analysts said bitcoin must reclaim $84,400 to revive ETF demand, with fund holders underwater and leverage keeping downside risks elevated.

BlackRock's third bitcoin bet, still no altcoins

Bloomberg Intelligence's James Seyffart noted on X that this is BlackRock's third bitcoin ETF filing, and pointed out that the firm still has only bitcoin and Ethereum products even as other issuers launched ETFs tracking XRP, SOL and DOGE over the past couple of years, The Block reported. The world's largest asset manager is doubling down on bitcoin structures rather than broadening into altcoin ETFs, a notable contrast to rivals chasing the altcoin ETF pipeline.

Gox collapse, after Karpeles argued that clearer warnings in March could have prevented more than $90 million in user losses tied to tampered devices.
