Mt. Gox Extends Creditor Repayment Deadline to October 2027, Keeping 34,500 BTC Off the Market Another Year
Published October 19, 2026, 10:00 AM PKT. Based on rehabilitation trustee Nobuaki Kobayashi's official announcement of October 16, 2026 (primary source, relayed via mtgox.com), and October 12-19, 2026 reporting by Foresight News, AiTraderView, Finance Magnates and CoinDesk (secondary sources).
Mt. Gox's rehabilitation trustee Nobuaki Kobayashi announced on October 16, 2026 that the defunct exchange's creditor repayment deadline is extended from October 31, 2026 to October 31, 2027, with the approval of the Tokyo court overseeing the rehabilitation. The move is the fourth pushback since the original October 2023 repayment target, and it keeps roughly 34,500 BTC, worth about $2.9 billion, under the trustee's control for another year, according to Arkham data cited by AiTraderView.
The October 16 announcement
Kobayashi said the extension was necessary to complete repayments to creditors "to the extent reasonably practicable," the standard the trustee has used in each prior announcement. The trustee said basic repayments, early lump-sum repayments and intermediate repayments have largely been completed for creditors whose paperwork is in order and whose payment process ran without problems, according to Foresight News. A considerable number of creditors remain unpaid because they have not completed the required procedures or hit issues during processing, Kobayashi said, which is why earlier deadlines were pushed back as well. The extension decision came 12 days before the October 31 deadline.
The 34,500 BTC still on the trustee's books
Arkham Intelligence data cited by AiTraderView on October 12 put the trustee's wallets at about 34,500 BTC, worth roughly $2.9 billion at bitcoin's price near $82,854 that day. That is down more than 75% from the roughly 142,000 BTC the estate held in mid-2024, per Finance Magnates. The estate's reserved assets originally included 142,000 bitcoin, 143,000 Bitcoin Cash and about 69 billion yen in cash. Traders watch the trustee wallets closely: on June 2, 2026, about 10,306 BTC, worth roughly $731 million at the time, moved to an unmarked address, briefly raising fears of exchange deposits, according to AiTraderView. Bitcoin traded near $81,600 on October 18, per MABOnChain's market coverage.
Repayments so far
Creditors began receiving repayments in December 2023, nearly a decade after the exchange collapsed, according to Finance Magnates. About 19,500 creditors had received repayments through platforms such as Kraken and Bitstamp as of late March 2025, per reporting by Crypto.news citing CoinDesk. The trustee has said repayments went out through bank transfers and PayPal for fiat creditors alongside in-kind crypto distributions, and that the varied claim types and payment methods are a core reason the process runs long.
The market's most patient overhang
The extension removes one of bitcoin's oldest known supply overhangs from the near-term calendar for another 12 months. Past trustee wallet movements have rattled sentiment even when they turned out to be internal transfers, a dynamic traders now treat as routine: every on-chain movement tied to the estate draws immediate scrutiny for signs of creditor selling. The estate's history runs back to February 2014, when Mt. Gox collapsed after losing about 850,000 bitcoin in a security breach; roughly 200,000 BTC were later recovered, according to Finance Magnates. More than 12 years after the collapse, the final payouts are now scheduled for October 31, 2027.

Ledger CEO Pascal Gauthier Clashes With Karpeles Over $90M Hardware Wallet Implants
Ledger CEO Pascal Gauthier publicly clashed with former Mt. Gox chief Mark Karpeles on X over how early Ledger knew about sophisticated hardware spy implants and how loudly it warned customers. Gauthier defended Ledger's response and called Karpeles 'no white knight,' referencing the 2014 Mt. Gox collapse, after Karpeles argued that clearer warnings in March could have prevented more than $90 million in user losses tied to tampered devices.
Cysic Attacker Sold 7.2M Minted Tokens and Bridged $727,000 to Ethereum Before the Blacklist
On-chain records reviewed by The Block show the attacker who exploited Cysic's cross-chain bridge on October 17 sold 7.2 million of the 10 million fraudulently minted CYS tokens in 26 transfers within 28 minutes, then bridged the proceeds off BNB Chain and received 306.6 ETH, worth about $727,000, on Ethereum before Cysic blacklisted the recipient address. The remaining 2.8 million CYS was frozen by the blacklist, and the bridge stays closed until a security review ends.

Qubic Loses $1.3M as 1,404 Wallets Drained in Seed-Randomness Attack, Network Halted
Qubic halted its network at tick 85,371,949 on October 18, 2026, after an attacker drained 1,404 wallets of 2.94 trillion QU worth about $1.3 million between October 17 and 18. The project says the theft exploited insufficient randomness in wallet seeds generated on older Apple devices and browsers, not the Qubic protocol itself. About 87.1% of the stolen tokens remain immobilized on the paused network, while MEXC froze the 12.9% that reached the exchange.
Gitcoin (GTC) Jumps 13% to $0.25 as Upbit Listing and Techne Rebrand Momentum Holds

Thai Police Arrest Chinese Suspect in Bangkok Over Alleged $75M Laundering Network
Thai immigration police detained 37-year-old Chinese national Wu Chaoshuai at a luxury housing estate in Bangkok's Saphan Sung district on October 16, 2026. His Thai visa expired more than three years ago; Thailand plans to deport him to China after immigration proceedings.
Cysic Halts Cross-Chain Bridge After Attacker Mints 10 Million CYS on BNB Chain
Cysic suspended its cross-chain bridge after an attacker exploited a processing flaw to mint 10 million CYS on BNB Smart Chain on October 17, 2026. Preliminary findings point to unauthorized access to a database supporting the bridge; the recipient address was blacklisted about 76 minutes later with roughly 2.8 million CYS frozen in it. Cysic says no user wallets were touched and the mainnet was unaffected, and that the mint size alone does not establish the dollar loss, which is still under review.
Vitalik Buterin Builds 'Paranoid Mode' AI Agent Setup Using Tor, Cover Traffic and zkAPI
Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin unveiled an experimental 'paranoid mode' for his pi AI agent harness that routes every conversation through a separate Tor circuit, masks requests with random cover traffic, pays for model access through the Ethereum-based zkAPI payment system, and rewrites every prompt locally before it reaches the provider. He says the setup is getting usable but still slow, and warns that Tor is a poor fit against a provider colluding with the network guard, calling instead for a specialized mixnet.
