Published October 18, 2026, 10:00 PM PKT. Based on Binance market data pulled October 18, 2026 at 16:53 UTC (primary source), CoinGabbar's October 12, 2026 report on the Upbit listing (primary source), TokenPost's October 12, 2026 market report (secondary source), Phemex News' October 8, 2026 report on the Techne rebrand (secondary source), AiCoin/Foresight News' October 8, 2026 report (secondary source), Coinhills exchange market data (October 18, 2026), JustScreener market data (October 18, 2026) and Finnhub market data (October 18, 2026).

Gitcoin's GTC token climbed about 13% on October 18, 2026, leading Binance's top-volume gainers as momentum from a South Korean exchange listing and the protocol's "Techne" rebrand held into a second week. GTC traded near $0.25 late Sunday after touching an intraday high near $0.29, according to Binance market data.

The move caps a month-long repricing. GTC is up roughly 150% since late September, when it changed hands near $0.10, according to reports by AiCoin and Phemex News, a run that started when Gitcoin founder Kevin Owocki announced the protocol's restart plan and accelerated when Upbit opened Korean won trading.

Sunday's 13% jump, by the numbers

Binance's 24-hour ticker showed GTC at $0.2531, up 13.0%, with an intraday range of $0.2231 to $0.2897 and $9.7 million in spot quote volume, according to the exchange's market data pulled at 16:53 UTC on October 18. That made GTC the largest gainer among Binance tokens doing more than $5 million in daily volume.

Across all venues, activity was heavier. JustScreener reported 494 million GTC changing hands in 24 hours, worth about $124.4 million, with Binance accounting for $112 million of that turnover. The same data showed perpetual open interest of about $9 million and an average funding rate of negative 0.3885%, meaning short sellers were paying longs, which typically signals bearish positioning in derivatives even as spot climbs.

Finnhub market data put GTC at $0.2528, up 13.3% on the day, with a one-month return of 177.3% against a five-day return of negative 19.4%, showing the current leg follows a sharp pullback earlier this month.

The Upbit listing that started the run

The October 12 listing on Upbit, South Korea's largest crypto exchange, was the immediate catalyst. Upbit published its notice only 30 minutes before trading started, opening KRW and USDT markets for GTC at 19:30 KST on October 12, with deposits and withdrawals restricted to the Ethereum network, CoinGabbar reported, citing the exchange's official announcement.

The price reacted first. CoinGabbar reported GTC surged more than 93% in 24 hours after the announcement, climbing from a flat session near $0.18. TokenPost reported a 117.6% intraday move on October 12 that briefly carried GTC to $0.44 before it settled near $0.36.

Korean flow is still the engine of the trade. Coinhills market data updated October 18 at 13:04 UTC showed Upbit's GTC/KRW pair trading 114 million GTC, about 40 billion Korean won in volume, up 12.5% at 351 won, keeping the Korean pair one of the token's busiest venues six days after the listing.

Techne, the December restart

The longer-running catalyst is Gitcoin's restart. On October 2, founder Kevin Owocki published the "October 2026 Restart Update" in the protocol's governance forum, officially naming the long-awaited restart "Techne," the Greek word for craft or the knowledge of making, according to Foresight News, as reported by AiCoin.

The plan targets a mid-December 2026 launch, and Owocki said the biggest risk of delay is legal documentation rather than code, AiCoin reported. Crucially for token holders, Owocki stated clearly that there are no plans to issue new tokens, a point Phemex News also flagged in its October 8 report.

Even so, analysts flagged in early October that the rally may be more about tight, illiquid float than a return of fundamentals. AiCoin cited Vokong data suggesting the move looked like concentrated positioning in a thin float rather than a value-driven re-rating.

What could stall the momentum

Listing-driven rallies in small-cap tokens have a well-known pattern of fading once the announcement flow stops, and GTC fits the profile. MetaMask's price page showed GTC at an all-time low of $0.06 earlier this year against an all-time high of $22.37, and the token's market capitalization sits near $22 million, meaning modest order flow can move the price in both directions.

Derivatives data adds a caution flag. With open interest near $9 million and negative funding, the spot rally is running alongside bearish positioning, a setup that can snap either way if momentum reverses. JustScreener's technical read showed a neutral RSI of 62, suggesting the token is neither overbought nor oversold at current levels.

On Binance Square, traders were already split on October 17: one widely viewed post framed GTC as breaking out of a $0.1876 base with targets up to $0.29, while another compared GTC against Epic Chain, noting GTC was up 21% but trailing its perp-market rival.

Cysic Halts Cross-Chain Bridge After Attacker Mints 10 Million CYS on BNB Chain

October 18, 2026 · 4 min read

Cysic suspended its cross-chain bridge after an attacker exploited a processing flaw to mint 10 million CYS on BNB Smart Chain on October 17, 2026. Preliminary findings point to unauthorized access to a database supporting the bridge; the recipient address was blacklisted about 76 minutes later with roughly 2.8 million CYS frozen in it. Cysic says no user wallets were touched and the mainnet was unaffected, and that the mint size alone does not establish the dollar loss, which is still under review.

Vitalik Buterin Builds 'Paranoid Mode' AI Agent Setup Using Tor, Cover Traffic and zkAPI

October 18, 2026 · 4 min read

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin unveiled an experimental 'paranoid mode' for his pi AI agent harness that routes every conversation through a separate Tor circuit, masks requests with random cover traffic, pays for model access through the Ethereum-based zkAPI payment system, and rewrites every prompt locally before it reaches the provider. He says the setup is getting usable but still slow, and warns that Tor is a poor fit against a provider colluding with the network guard, calling instead for a specialized mixnet.
