Visa Partners With Mesh to Make Crypto Balances Spendable at 175 Million Merchants

By MABOnChain Desk · Published · Updated · 4 min read

Editorial digital-art illustration in the CoinTelegraph style: a giant glowing smartphone with a crypto wallet app being tapped against a contactless payment terminal radiating rings of light, golden stablecoin and bitcoin tokens streaming through the air toward a dusk-lit global cityscape of merchant shopfronts, blockchain chain links and golden payment waves connecting wallet to merchants, deep navy to teal palette with gold accents, cinematic lighting, ultra-detailed painterly 16:9 composition, no text.

Published October 20, 2026, 09:20 PM PKT. Based on the joint announcement by Mesh and Visa, issued via PR Newswire on October 19, 2026 (primary source), with reporting from The Block, NewsBTC and This Week in Fintech (secondary sources).

Mesh, the crypto payments network, announced a strategic partnership with Visa on October 19, 2026 to make crypto and stablecoin balances spendable across Visa's global acceptance network. The collaboration, which Mesh described as the first of its kind, is designed to let consumers pay in stores and online directly from the balances they hold in participating wallet apps, across a network Visa counts at more than 175 million merchant locations in over 200 countries and territories.

A Visa credential behind the scenes

Mesh will enable participating wallets and platforms to offer what it calls a pay-from-balance experience. When a consumer taps a phone at a standard contactless terminal or checks out online, a Visa credential is provisioned behind the scenes, so the payment clears without the user having to sell, transfer or preload funds first, according to the announcement. The merchant receives a standard payment with no new hardware and no change to the existing checkout workflow. Mesh orchestrates how each transaction is funded and converted across supported balances, including crypto, stablecoins and fiat, and acts as the program manager handling user onboarding and identity checks.

The last-mile problem

"Crypto never had a spending problem, it has a last-mile problem, and until now, closing it meant getting a separate card," Bam Azizi, chief executive and co-founder of Mesh, said in the announcement. Every existing route for spending stablecoin value still asks the consumer to act first, the announcement said: cash out to a bank account and wait, or sign up for a card tied to a single platform. Rubail Birwadker, Visa's global head of growth, said consumers increasingly expect to use their money however and wherever they choose, and that working with Mesh helps expand how digital asset balances connect to the payment experiences consumers and merchants rely on every day.

774 million owners, $1.5 billion in monthly crypto card volume

The market the two companies are chasing is large and mostly untouched by everyday spending. Global crypto owners reached 774 million as of June 2026, according to Crypto.com research cited in the announcement, while crypto card volumes were running at roughly $1.5 billion a month by late 2025, according to American Banker, a small share of overall payments. Mesh says more than 200 enterprises use its network, including Kalshi, Tools for Humanity, Félix Pago, Majority and KAST, and that it connects hundreds of wallets, exchanges and platforms. Founded in 2020, Mesh joined Paxos's Global Dollar Network over the past year, launched the Mesh Alliance Program with more than 50 partners, and released Mesh Wallet, a product the company says lets AI agents complete real-world transactions using stablecoins.

What is not decided yet

The announcement leaves the rollout details open. Initial availability, supported devices and the specific participating platforms will be announced as the rollout gets closer, Mesh said. Platforms where consumers hold crypto, stablecoin or fiat balances can offer the experience through a single integration with Mesh rather than building their own card programs, which the companies position as the pitch to wallet and fintech apps. Once a platform is live, its users can spend anywhere Visa is accepted, the announcement said.
