JPMorgan Brings JPM Coin Deposit Token to Ethereum for Institutional Clients

JPMorgan Chase, the world's biggest bank by market capitalization, is bringing its JPM Coin deposit token to Ethereum for institutional clients, Bloomberg reported on October 19, 2026. The bank said in a statement on Monday that JPM Coin, which represents U.S. dollar deposits held at JPMorgan, will be made available to the company's institutional clients on the Ethereum network. The move extends the token beyond Coinbase's Base layer-2 network, where it first launched in November 2025, and marks another step in Wall Street's growing comfort with moving money on public blockchains.
Why Ethereum: liquidity and existing clients
Emma Landriault, global head of Kinexys Labs at JPMorgan, told Bloomberg the bank picked Ethereum for its established depth of on-chain liquidity and tokenized assets, and because its clients are already active there. Kinexys by JPMorgan said the same in its own framing: Ethereum's large pool of on-chain funds and tokenized assets made it the natural next public blockchain after Base. According to Landriault, crypto companies could use the token for blockchain payments, while financial institutions could use it to settle trades and post collateral. She described the moment as a year of convergence: "We've clearly been in a year of further convergence between Wall Street and crypto," she said, adding that "it's not just Wall Street going to public chains, but the institutional web3 players getting more embedded and partnering with traditional financial institutions."
The deposit token, not a stablecoin
JPM Coin, also styled JPMD, is not a stablecoin in the Circle or Tether sense. It is a tokenized claim on dollars held in JPMorgan bank accounts, available only to approved institutional participants. The token lets eligible clients send and receive money in seconds, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, instead of waiting days and only during banking hours, according to Bloomberg's report. JPMorgan restricts transfers to vetted institutional participants, and retail customers cannot use it. The intended uses go beyond transfers: the bank expects clients to use the token for on-chain payments and for settlement or collateralization in transactions involving tokenized assets.
The public-chain roadmap: Base, then Canton, now Ethereum
The Ethereum deployment is part of a deliberate multi-chain plan. JPMorgan launched JPM Coin on Base, the Coinbase-affiliated Ethereum layer-2, in November 2025, and said at the time that it planned to support additional public blockchains. In January, the bank announced plans to bring the deposit token to the Canton Network as well. CoinGape noted on October 19 that JPMorgan has already put two tokenized money market funds, MONY and JLTXX, live on Ethereum mainnet, so JPM Coin now adds the cash leg to products the bank already runs on the network. Marius Smith, a JPMorgan digital assets voice on X, marked the moment on October 19, writing that "JPM Coin is now live on Ethereum mainnet for institutional clients," calling it "another meaningful step for institutional finance on public infrastructure."
More than $4 trillion through Kinexys
The scale of the underlying platform gives the expansion context. Kinexys by JPMorgan, the bank's blockchain unit, has processed more than $4 trillion in cumulative transactions, averaging around $7 billion a day, according to coincentral's October 19 report. The Ethereum rollout puts a share of that institutional flow on the same public infrastructure that retail users, DeFi protocols and stablecoin issuers already share, even though the token itself stays gated to approved participants. ETH traded around $2,434 on October 19, off a 24-hour high near $2,445, per CoinGape, amid a rebound in the broader crypto market.
