Filecoin's Solstice Upgrade Goes Live Today, Rewiring Block Rewards Toward Paid Storage

By MABOnChain Desk · Published · Updated · 5 min read

Editorial digital-art illustration in the CoinTelegraph style: a colossal glowing planet made of storage-server monoliths and data blocks, streams of golden FIL reward coins splitting from a central beacon into two currents, one flowing into thriving illuminated data silos of paid storage, the other falling into a dramatic molten burn furnace with gold embers, cosmic solstice sunrise on the horizon, teal and gold palette over deep navy space, ultra-detailed 16:9 wide composition, no text.

Filecoin is about to rewrite how it pays the people who keep its network running. The nv29 mainnet upgrade, codenamed Solstice and approved as FIP-0118, is scheduled to activate on October 19, 2026, at approximately 12:59 UTC, at epoch 6470279, according to Filecoin's official network status page as reported by CryptoBriefing on October 16. TradingView described it as one of the largest changes to FIL reward economics since the network launched. The upgrade ties a growing share of block rewards to whether customers actually pay for storage, and it lands days after the end of a six-year genesis vesting schedule that is expected to cut daily new FIL issuance by about 75%.

The 95% to 50% reward glide

Under FIP-0118, each block reward is divided into streams. The consensus share goes to storage providers that win blocks, and it currently sits at 95%, according to CryptoBriefing's October 16 analysis. Under Solstice, that share steps down toward a 50% floor over about nine quarters, or roughly 2.25 years. Storage providers that depend only on winning blocks will see that portion of their rewards shrink over the transition window. The glide is gradual by design, but it is directional: rewards shift from consensus-only mining to services that bring paying customers onto the network.

Burned, not reallocated

The second stream is the service share, which starts at 5% and goes to Registered Service Orchestrators, the participants tasked with driving paid demand onto the network. The service share can climb in 5% increments, but only when on-chain Filecoin Pay volume hits targets denominated in US dollars, CryptoBriefing reported. Any portion of the service share that goes unearned is burned, permanently removed from circulation rather than handed to someone else. That creates a self-adjusting dynamic: if paid usage underperforms, more tokens get destroyed and supply tightens; if paid usage outperforms, more tokens reach service orchestrators, but that would reflect genuine revenue on the network. The dollar-denominated targets also tie a crypto-native reward schedule to fiat-measured activity, so swings in FIL's price could affect how quickly payment volume reaches the thresholds. The public targets give observers an outside scorecard, and every 5% step in the service share becomes a visible milestone.

The 75% issuance cut

Solstice arrives just days after another supply event. The six-year vesting schedule for Protocol Labs and Filecoin Foundation allocations wrapped up around October 15, 2026; Filecoin developer Molly Mackinlay posted on October 14 that genesis vesting officially ended on October 14 at 14:44 UTC, according to TradingView News. CryptoBriefing estimated the end of that vesting removes roughly 66.7 million FIL per year from the supply schedule. Combined with the Solstice reward changes, the analysis expects daily new FIL entering circulation to fall by around 75%. AMBCrypto, reporting on October 18, said reduced supply is expected to increase scarcity and support appreciation over the long term.

Why Filecoin is ditching Fil+

FIP-0118 replaces the Filecoin Plus, or Fil+, DataCap system. Fil+ was meant to steer rewards toward useful data by granting extra reward weight to storage of verified client data. In practice, CryptoBriefing reported, the system proved prone to governance problems and exploitation: when the reward for looking like a real client is high enough, some participants will put real effort into looking like one. Solstice swaps human-administered verification for a simpler test: money changing hands through Filecoin Pay. On-chain payment volume becomes the signal, rather than an allocator's sign-off. After the upgrade, the old manually reviewed bonus-storage pathway is discontinued, and new sectors count toward computing power under uniform rules, according to the Binance Square announcement.

Exchanges brace as Binance pauses FIL transfers

Exchanges are preparing for activation. Binance said it plans to suspend FIL network deposits and withdrawals at 11:59 UTC on October 19, one hour before the upgrade at block height 6,470,279, according to a Binance Square post; spot trading of FIL is not affected, and resumption depends on network stability after the upgrade. Nodes and miners were told to upgrade to Lotus v1.37.0 or later in advance. Filecoin also used the runway to add tooling for AI agents to store data and pay on-chain, alongside the Integral Spacetime storage neocloud and Fil One, an S3-compatible object storage service, TokenPost reported on October 16. Filecoin said it requires mainnet node operators and storage providers to adopt Solstice.

FIL tests $1 into the upgrade

The market heads into activation on the defensive. FIL traded around $1.13 on the evening of October 17, down slightly over 24 hours, according to the Binance Square post. AMBCrypto reported on October 18 that FIL was down 8.95% over 24 hours, with a 27.3% plunge in daily trading volume and a 9.8% decline in open interest, reflecting cautious short-term expectations. Since the local high of $1.276 made on October 11, prices had retreated 17.18%, but FIL remained above two demand zones at $0.95 and $0.80. The technical picture was mixed: the RSI and MACD were retreating toward neutral, while on-balance volume remained in an uptrend that began in September, AMBCrypto said.

Vitalik Buterin Builds 'Paranoid Mode' AI Agent Setup Using Tor, Cover Traffic and zkAPI

October 18, 2026 · 4 min read

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin unveiled an experimental 'paranoid mode' for his pi AI agent harness that routes every conversation through a separate Tor circuit, masks requests with random cover traffic, pays for model access through the Ethereum-based zkAPI payment system, and rewrites every prompt locally before it reaches the provider. He says the setup is getting usable but still slow, and warns that Tor is a poor fit against a provider colluding with the network guard, calling instead for a specialized mixnet.
