VanEck Withdraws Lido Staked ETH ETF Filing, Shelving the First U.S. stETH Fund

By MABOnChain Desk · Published · Updated · 4 min read

Editorial digital-art illustration in the CoinTelegraph style: a colossal glowing stock filing document stamped with a massive broken red WITHDRAWN seal being torn apart by two giant shadowy institutional hands, shredded paper fragments scattering over a field of luminous blue liquid-staking water-droplet tokens raining down from a golden bank vault building, deep navy and gold tones with electric cyan highlights, dramatic comic-book shading, 16:9 composition.

Published October 15, 2026, 00:45 UTC. Based on VanEck's SEC withdrawal notice filed October 14, 2026, and reporting from Crypto Briefing and The Defiant dated October 14, 2026.

VanEck has pulled the plug on its Lido Staked ETH ETF. The asset manager filed a notice with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission on October 14, 2026 asking to withdraw the registration statement for the fund, and confirmed that no shares have been issued and none will be.

The proposal was a first for the U.S. market. VanEck was the first firm to file for an American ETF tied to Lido's liquid staking token, stETH, according to Crypto Briefing. The withdrawal ends the attempt before a single share ever traded.

The filing that never became effective

VanEck's withdrawal notice confirmed that the registration was being withdrawn and that the fund will never issue shares, according to Crypto Briefing. The firm's S-1 registration statement never became effective, The Defiant reported. VanEck did not disclose a reason for the reversal, and the timing of the decision was left unexplained, according to Crypto Briefing.

What VanEck was trying to build

The fund's timeline was short. VanEck registered the product as a Delaware statutory trust around October 2, 2025, and the S-1 registration statement reached the SEC sometime between October 16 and October 20, 2025, Crypto Briefing reported.

The ETF would have held stETH directly, giving investors exposure to Ethereum staking rewards without touching the blockchain themselves. The design aimed to offer daily liquidity and on-chain transparency in a format institutional investors already understand, according to Crypto Briefing. A pension fund or wealth manager could have collected staking yield through a brokerage account, with no wallets or validators to run, and the structure was pitched as tax-efficient, Crypto Briefing reported.

The numbers behind the bet

At the time of the original filing, Lido's total value locked sat in the range of $38 billion to $40 billion, and Lido had distributed more than $2 billion in cumulative staking rewards since its launch, Crypto Briefing reported. Markets noticed the filing: Lido's LDO governance token rallied approximately 7% after the ETF announcement, according to Crypto Briefing.

The regulatory backdrop

The withdrawal lands during a period of shifting SEC thinking on staking. The regulator has issued guidance that distinguishes certain liquid staking activities from securities, Crypto Briefing reported. Interest in liquid staking ETFs has not vanished with VanEck's exit, with development of similar products continuing in the United States and Europe, according to Crypto Briefing.
