NBA's Instagram Account Hacked, Briefly Promotes Fake $NBA Solana Memecoin
Published October 15, 2026, 17:16 UTC. Based on reporting from Front Office Sports, Coinlive, EssentiallySports, AMBCrypto, and CryptoPulseDaily. The NBA had not publicly confirmed the suspected breach at the time of reporting.
The NBA's official Instagram account appeared to be compromised on October 14, 2026, briefly displaying a post urging fans to buy a cryptocurrency called "$NBA Coin." The now-deleted post, which included a contract address for a memecoin created on Pump.fun, a platform where anyone can launch their own token, was removed after pulling in thousands of interactions, raising suspicions that hackers had taken control of the league's account to exploit its global following, according to Front Office Sports.
The $NBA post that wasn't
The deleted post read: "Where basketball passion meets blockchain innovation. Join the community and explore $NBA today. BUY NOW!" It also carried the token's contract address, which users could use to identify and trade the coin, Coinlive reported. The memecoin was created on Pump.fun, a Solana-based launchpad, and presented as an NBA-linked project. Comments on the post were later disabled, and the account returned to publishing regular basketball content, according to Coinlive.
The league did not immediately respond to a request for comment about the apparent hack, Front Office Sports reported, and the NBA had not publicly confirmed the suspected breach at the time of reporting, according to Coinlive.
3,592 likes for a $3,500 token
The post reportedly attracted 3,592 likes and 500 comments before it was removed, according to a post on X by security researcher Senior DeFi cited by Coinlive. Despite the exposure on one of the world's most-followed sports accounts, the token attracted little buying interest: its market capitalization was around $3,500 on the evening of October 14, 2026, according to Front Office Sports, suggesting trading activity stayed limited. Pluang reported the token briefly crashed near the $40,000 mark after the promotion before fading.
The small numbers are the story's warning in miniature. A post on a verified, official league account can look like a legitimate investment opportunity, and fans who bought believing the token had the NBA's backing could face losses as its price declined, Coinlive noted. The NBA has not announced any official $NBA coin, according to EssentiallySports.
The March 2025 playbook
The league has dealt with this exact playbook before. In March 2025, the NBA's official X account and regional accounts, including NBA Spain and NBA UK, were hacked to promote a token also called $NBA Coin, falsely presented as the league's official digital asset on Solana. That post was deleted within about five minutes, and the league confirmed the accounts had been hacked, according to Front Office Sports and AMBCrypto. During the same incident, NASCAR's official X account was also hacked, Front Office Sports reported.
The repeat makes the pattern clear: hackers target high-follower sports accounts, spin up a cheap memecoin under a familiar brand, and let the verification badge do the selling. Fans should avoid connecting a wallet or buying a token based solely on a social media post, especially when it claims an official link to a major sports brand, EssentiallySports advised.
