Lighter's LIT Gives Back Its CFTC-Filing Rally as Buybacks Continue and a December Unlock Looms
Published October 26, 2026, 9:55 PM PKT. Based on a CoinGecko market snapshot observed October 26, 2026 (primary source), and reporting by CryptoBriefing, CoinCentral, TokenPost, Crypto.news, CryptoFox, DefiLlama and Pluang (secondary sources).
Lighter's LIT token is giving back the rally that a planned US regulatory filing set off last week. LIT traded near $3.08 on October 26, 2026, down about 4% over 24 hours and about 36% over 30 days, according to CoinGecko, with a market value of about $768.5 million, ranked 85th, and about $77.6 million in 24-hour trading volume. Five days earlier, the token had surged to about $3.90. The round trip frames the question now facing LIT holders: whether the November filing plan, steady buybacks, or a large December token unlock matters most.
The October 21 rally: a CFTC filing plan and a European ETP
LIT rose more than 15% on October 21, 2026, reaching approximately $3.90, according to CryptoBriefing, after Lighter said it plans to seek a derivatives license from the US Commodity Futures Trading Commission in November 2026. CoinCentral put the gain at 19.7% to $3.83 on the same day, with the token trading between $3.16 and $3.87 and its market value reaching about $951.5 million on about $102.5 million in volume. The two outlets differ on the exact peak print, but they agree on the direction, the size, and the trigger.
Lighter founder Vladimir Novakovski said the team has spent roughly 11 months in conversations with regulators, according to CryptoBriefing, and the company's stated goal is to become the first on-chain perpetual futures exchange to obtain CFTC approval. TokenPost reported that Lighter disclosed the plan during a third-quarter investor call and that approval, if it comes, could lay the groundwork for a dedicated US operating entity. A filing is not an approval, and the company has given no timeline for a decision, so the November date marks the start of a process, not its conclusion.
The rally had a second leg the day before. On October 20, 2026, 21Shares launched a physically backed Lighter ETP on Germany's Xetra exchange under the ticker LIHT, with a US dollar line under LIHU, according to Crypto.news, which reported that Deutsche Borse confirmed October 20 as the product's first trading day. CryptoFox reported a 2.50% expense ratio and said the product holds the underlying token in custody. The issuer said Lighter directs revenue toward LIT repurchases and permanent token burns, according to Crypto.news.
The Robinhood connection helped the story travel. Robinhood Chain integrated Lighter for perpetual trading on July 1, 2026, under a 50/50 revenue split, according to CryptoBriefing, and Lighter has set aside 11 million LIT for incentives, with activity through the Robinhood Wallet earning double points. Delphi Digital named LIT a core pick in a new report on speculative trading, citing zero retail fees and distribution through the Robinhood Wallet, according to CoinCentral.
The fade: from about $3.90 to about $3.08
The gains did not hold into the weekend. LIT led the largest 90 cryptocurrencies lower in Pluang's October 26 market snapshot, falling 6.67% to $3.04, while 75 of the 90 largest coins declined. CoinGecko's later snapshot put the token at $3.08, down about 4% over 24 hours. The two snapshots were taken at different times and need not match to the cent, but both point the same way: the October 21 peak near $3.90 has been cut by roughly one fifth.
Context tempers the pullback. LIT traded at $3.08 against an all-time high of $7.86 set on December 30, 2025, according to CoinGecko, so the token remains about 61% below its peak even after the October rally. The 30-day decline of about 36% also predates the filing news, which means the rally interrupted a downtrend rather than reversing it. A prior setback still hangs over the story: Robinhood chose Bitstamp over Lighter on September 30, 2026, sending LIT down roughly 17%, according to a CoinStats market summary, a reminder that the Robinhood relationship cuts both ways.
Buybacks keep running, and a 500 million unlock looms
What has not stopped is the buyback engine. Lighter completed the burning of 2,452,017 LIT tokens acquired through automated buybacks by the end of the third quarter of 2026, according to Pluang, and CoinCentral reported that Lighter has bought back about 15.5 million LIT with plans to burn them. DefiLlama's October 26 data put Lighter's holder revenue at $62,668 over 24 hours and $2.74 million over 30 days, and DefiLlama describes the flow as perpetual futures fees used for LIT buybacks from the treasury. Buybacks support the price at the margin, but they are small next to daily trading volume of about $77.6 million.
The larger number on the calendar is the unlock. A 500 million LIT token unlock begins on December 27, 2026, with a three-year linear vesting schedule, according to the CoinStats summary. That is twice the current circulating supply of 250 million tokens, against 981.9 million already issued and a maximum supply of 1 billion, according to CoinGecko. Vesting spreads the release over three years rather than dumping it at once, but the overhang gives traders a reason to sell rallies until the schedule's early tranches are absorbed. Between now and then, the November CFTC filing is the next dated catalyst, and whether Lighter files on schedule will say more about this story than any single day's price print.
