Polymarket CEO Hints at Native Token With 'Real Programmable Utility' at TOKEN2049

Editorial digital-art illustration in the CoinTelegraph style: a towering translucent globe of glowing green and red prediction-market candlesticks over a neon Singapore night skyline, a luminous question mark morphing into a gold coin at its center, with swirling YES/NO odds ticker ribbons and rooftop crowd silhouettes watching in cyan and magenta light.

Published October 14, 2026, 06:10 UTC. Based on Shayne Coplan's remarks at TOKEN2049 in Singapore on October 7, 2026, as reported by crypto.news, cryptonews.net, Crypto Briefing and Phemex News, plus Polymarket's equity financing history and CFTC records for Polymarket US.

Polymarket CEO Shayne Coplan told a TOKEN2049 audience that the prediction market company is exploring an on-chain asset with "real programmable utility" tied to the platform's economics, a concept he described as "how the idea of stock should work," while stopping short of announcing a token, a launch date, or an airdrop.

The TOKEN2049 fireside session

Coplan made the remarks on October 7 during a 30-minute fireside chat on the OKX Main Stage in Singapore, moderated by Balaji Srinivasan, according to the conference agenda and attendee accounts cited by cryptonews.net. The session was not livestreamed. According to two attendee accounts, Coplan said Polymarket is exploring an on-chain asset tied to the company's economics that would also carry programmatic utility, and he repeated that the remarks were not legal or financial advice. Neither account reports that Coplan used the word "token," per cryptonews.net, and crypto.news reports he identified no ownership rights, revenue arrangements, or governance privileges the asset might carry. His description focused on programmable functions the asset could perform inside Polymarket's financial ecosystem, without specifying how it would work or whether it would become available to existing platform users.

The revenue comparison that set the stage

The hint did not come out of nowhere. In early October, Coplan quote-posted a social media comparison of Polymarket's weekend revenue, $9.9 million, against Hyperliquid's $2.64 million, set next to the $HYPE token's roughly $86 billion fully diluted valuation, according to cryptonews.net, and added: "I may have a little something to say about this at Token 2049. See you in Singapore." The post fueled speculation that TOKEN2049 would bring a native cryptocurrency reveal, but no token was introduced during the October 7 and 8 conference. DefiLlama data cited by cryptonews.net puts Polymarket's fee haul at $26 million over the last seven days and $103 million over 30 days, compared with $17.4 million and $89.3 million for Hyperliquid over the same periods. The revenue-to-valuation gap is the fuel for the token thesis: Hyperliquid's HYPE carries a market value around $20.2 billion per CoinGecko, while Polymarket, which has no native token, operates with no such on-chain equity layer.

The POLY paper trail

Polymarket has left breadcrumbs. The company has registered trademarks associated with the names POLY and $POLY, according to reports cited by crypto.news, though trademark activity does not establish that a token exists or that any distribution plan has been approved. Airdrop speculation has circulated since October 2025, when users questioned whether the platform might reward traders through a future token distribution, but Polymarket has not confirmed a token name, ticker symbol, total supply, smart contract address, snapshot date, or eligibility rules. As of October 14, the company has not announced a token generation event or airdrop, and its public product documentation identifies no token distribution program for either its international platform or its U.S. application, according to crypto.news.

Equity first: the ICE money and the $20 billion question

While the token debate runs hot, Polymarket's real money has come through equity. Intercontinental Exchange, the parent of the New York Stock Exchange, agreed in October 2025 to invest up to $2 billion in the company at a valuation of about $8 billion before the investment, according to an ICE announcement, and the two companies agreed to examine future tokenization projects without committing to a cryptocurrency. ICE completed another $600 million of that commitment in March 2026, per crypto.news. Reports in April put Polymarket's valuation near $15 billion after additional financing, and August reports said the company was seeking about $1 billion at a valuation above $20 billion, terms that were never confirmed by a final company announcement, according to crypto.news. An initial public offering has surfaced in reports as another financing option, but Polymarket has not announced an IPO filing, a listing date, or an approved share offering.

The regulated U.S. track

The token question also runs into a regulatory seam. Polymarket acquired QCEX in 2025 and built a federally regulated U.S. business: the Commodity Futures Trading Commission lists QCX LLC, operating as Polymarket US, as a designated contract market, with July 9, 2025 as the original designation date, according to CFTC records cited by crypto.news. The domestic platform serves eligible U.S. customers through separate accounts, and Polymarket's June 2026 help center documentation says U.S. residents cannot trade through the international website. The CFTC recorded certification of amendments to the Polymarket US rulebook in April 2026. No announcement has confirmed how a future cryptocurrency would interact with either operation or whether U.S. users would qualify for a distribution, a gap that leaves the largest regulated piece of the business in legal limbo.
