Hyperliquid Strategies Triples Its Buyback to $100 Million While HYPE Slides 19% in a Month

Editorial digital-art illustration in the CoinTelegraph style: a towering glass corporate treasury vault with its heavy doors open, golden coins and glowing teal digital tokens pouring out across a dark trading floor, a large suited arm scooping coins back into the vault, a glowing red downward price chart line on a huge dark screen in the background, dramatic navy and gold palette, cinematic painterly lighting, dramatic 16:9 composition, no text, no logos, no identifiable person.

Published October 25, 2026, 10:05 AM PKT. Based on Hyperliquid Strategies Inc's press release of October 23, 2026 (primary source), distributed via PR Newswire, and reporting by Stocktwits (October 24, 2026), PANews (October 24, 2026), CryptoNews and Crypto Briefing (October 23-24, 2026), with market data from CoinGecko's trending list and Binance's HYPEUSDT ticker (secondary sources), all October 25, 2026.

Hyperliquid Strategies Inc, the Nasdaq-listed company built around accumulating HYPE, more than tripled the amount it can spend buying back its own stock on Friday, October 23, 2026, even as the token at the center of its balance sheet kept sliding. The board raised the company's stock repurchase authorization from $30 million to up to $100 million, with about $72 million still available under the enlarged program, and pushed the program's termination date from December 5, 2026 to October 31, 2027, according to the company's press release distributed via PR Newswire. HYPE topped CoinGecko's trending searches on Sunday morning while trading near $76.80, down more than 19% over the past month, according to CoinGecko and Binance data.

The $100 million authorization

The terms leave the board wide discretion over how, and whether, the money is spent. "The increase in the program reflects the Board's confidence in the Company's long-term capital strategy and provides flexibility to buy back PURR shares as part of the Company's broader treasury management framework," the company said in its announcement, according to PR Newswire. Shares may be repurchased in open market transactions at prevailing prices, in privately negotiated deals, or by other means allowed under federal securities laws, the company said. The timing, number and value of shares repurchased will be decided by management and will depend on the share price, market conditions and legal requirements, according to the same announcement. The program may be extended, suspended or discontinued at any time, the company added.

The arithmetic implies about $28 million of the earlier $30 million authorization had already been used before the increase, since roughly $72 million remains available under the $100 million cap, according to the company's own figures. The original $30 million authorization was announced in late August 2026, according to CryptoNews, so the board has now tripled the tool and stretched its runway by nearly a year in a single move.

A treasury stock trading below its tokens

The buyback lands while the company's shares trade below the value of the HYPE on its balance sheet, according to CryptoNews and Crypto Briefing. Hyperliquid Strategies held about 38.8 million HYPE tokens, worth roughly $2.9 billion, according to its treasury dashboard cited by Stocktwits. PANews put the holding at approximately 38.83 million tokens. The company describes itself as "currently the largest HYPE-focused digital asset treasury vehicle," according to its announcement.

The market reaction split in two directions on Friday. PURR stock closed up more than 1% on Friday, according to Stocktwits, while HYPE edged lower on Saturday. PURR shares have fallen more than 30% from their October high, according to CryptoNews and Crypto Briefing, which frames the buyback as a board reaching for a familiar tool: retiring discounted equity while the token it holds keeps falling. The company itself warned investors in its announcement that its stock price "will be highly correlated to the price of HYPE tokens," according to Stocktwits.

The token's side of the trade

HYPE's slide has not dented its visibility. The token ranked first on CoinGecko's trending searches on Sunday morning, October 25, 2026, ahead of Zcash, Bitcoin and Solana, according to CoinGecko's trending list. HYPE traded at $76.81 on Binance's HYPEUSDT pair on Sunday morning, down 0.74% over 24 hours, according to Binance ticker data. CoinGecko listed a market value of about $17.08 billion, ranking 11th, with about $748 million in 24-hour trading volume, according to its trending data.

The monthly drop stands in sharp contrast to the token's year. HYPE has fallen more than 19% over the past month, according to Stocktwits, after posting an all-time high of $97.96 a little over a month ago. The token is still up about 197% so far this year, according to the same report. One structural support for the token sits inside the protocol itself: 88.7% of Hyperliquid's fees go to open-market HYPE buybacks through its Assistance Fund, according to a market report on the platform's fee flows. That protocol-level buying is separate from the PURR stock repurchase announced on Friday, which covers the company's own shares, not HYPE tokens, a distinction CoinGabbar noted in its coverage.

The CME chief's KYC warning

The buyback also arrived in the same week Hyperliquid drew a public warning from the head of the world's largest derivatives exchange. CME Group CEO Terry Duffy said on Bloomberg's Odd Lots podcast on Tuesday that Hyperliquid was "basically the plumbing" and that its users should carry the regulatory burden, according to Stocktwits. "Don't know because there's no KYC. We don't know who they are. So there's a lot of violation of U.S. law for him to deploy what he was suggesting to manage," Duffy said, according to the same report.

Duffy also warned about automatic liquidations on highly leveraged products, saying such positions "can cascade and create market-moving events because of the high leverage and the small amount of dollars," according to Stocktwits. His comments came a day before CME reported $1.7 billion in revenue, its highest for a third quarter on record, according to the same report. The remarks add a regulatory overhang to a token already under pressure: a treasury company buying back its own stock while the exchange whose token it holds faces questions about how it would operate in the United States.

What the buyback does not guarantee

Nothing in Friday's announcement obliges the company to spend the remaining $72 million. The authorization is a ceiling, not a commitment, and the company said explicitly that there is no guarantee as to the number of shares that will be repurchased, according to the PR Newswire release. If HYPE keeps falling, the correlation the company disclosed cuts both ways: the stock it is buying back falls with the token, and the treasury value backing the whole trade shrinks with it.

What the move does signal is a board choosing to defend its equity rather than simply accumulate more tokens. For a vehicle whose stated purpose is holding HYPE, retiring discounted shares is now, in the words of one market report, nearly as important as the token purchases themselves. The next test is mechanical: whether management actually deploys the remaining $72 million, and whether HYPE holds the $76 to $78 zone it traded in over the weekend, or gives back more of its yearly gains.
